We are seeking a Bio IT Scientist with a deep understanding of viral genomics and infectious disease research. This role involves developing and maintaining bioinformatics pipelines, analyzing large-scale sequencing data (including WGS, RNA-seq, and metagenomics), and collaborating closely with wet-lab teams to drive project success. The ideal candidate will combine strong technical skills in computational biology with a passion for solving real-world challenges related to global health, outbreak surveillance, and regulatory requirements.
About Your Tasks and Responsibilities
Main tasks and responsibilities include:
- Pipeline development & maintenance: Design, implement, and maintain scalable bioinformatics pipelines for viral genome assembly, variant calling, and phylogenetic analysis using up-to-date tools and databases.
- Data analysis & interpretation: Perform high-quality genomic analyses of viruses and other pathogens, including QC, troubleshooting, and clear interpretation of results for diverse teams.
- Collaboration & cross-functional support: Collaborate with wet-lab scientists and stakeholders to define experimental requirements and deliver clear data summaries, visualizations, and technical reports.
- Innovation & continuous improvement: Continuously evaluate and implement new bioinformatics, machine-learning, and HPC approaches to improve pipeline performance and workflow efficiency.
- Regulatory & Compliance: Ensure data integrity, security, and thorough documentation in accordance with GMP/GLP standards and relevant regulatory guidelines.
About Your Skills and Experience
To ensure a good match, we kindly ask that you only apply if you meet the following essential criteria:
- You carry a PhD degree in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Virology, or a related field plus 2 years working experience in commercial setting.
- You are proficient in Python, R, or similar scripting languages for bioinformatics tasks.
- You are proficient working with bioinformatics tools.
- You have a strong background in viral genomics (e.g., coronaviruses, influenza, HIV, Lenti, Adeno, hepatitis viruses) or infectious disease pathogens.
- Your English is at C1 level, speaking Dutch is a preference.
- You live within 35 km from our Leiden office.
To be successful in this role, you are comfortable working independently while taking full ownership of your work. You communicate clearly and effectively with a wide range of stakeholders and bring strong problem-solving skills, a high level of attention to detail, and the adaptability needed to thrive in a fast-paced, evolving environment.
