About Your Next Job
Help us to prevent diabetic foot wounds and amputations. Every 20 seconds someone loses a part of their foot due to a diabetic foot wound that does not heal. These amputations can be prevented if you can intervene in time.
Secuped develops an innovative home-monitoring device that detects early warning signs and alerts people at risk and their healthcare providers that an intervention is necessary When alerted in time, diabetic foot wounds can be prevented through relatively simple interventions like taking rest or getting better fitting footwear.
To make this possible, we are looking for a Biomedical Engineer or Computer Scientist who will lead the development of image-based analysis algorithms and integrate them into our diagnostic system.
About Your Next Colleagues
Secuped is a young startup, founded by Martijn van de Giessen and Arjen Schulpen, with the aim of preventing diabetic foot ulcers. We do this to help people at risk and to lower healthcare costs for everyone.
Secuped currently has a team of four full-time members. We are a small, but very experienced team in both product development and medical imaging/medical devices. We are based in PLNT, in Leiden, a lively community of startups, many of them focused on healthcare.
We work together closely with academic partners, patient organisations, medical professional organisations and external product development partners to realize our home-monitoring solution.
About Your Tasks and Responsibilities
Algorithm developer: You will translate the sensor data from the measurement hardware into clinically relevant metrics, helping identify early signs of diabetic foot complications. You'll lead algorithm development (e.g., foot alignment, trend aggregation, anomaly detection) while working in cooperation with the team.
This includes understanding foot biomechanics as well as temperature measurement (our core sensing method) and signal acquisition in a home-use environment. As with many things in life, this is not as easy as it may sound. Not in the least because it needs to work perfectly day-in, day-out in thousands of devices in varying circumstances.
Software architect and R&D Integrator: You will cooperate with other team members to plan system architecture and optimize and integrate signal and image-processing pipelines. You will work closely with hardware, software, and clinical partners to ensure accuracy, speed, and robustness in real-world use. You will also interact with clinicians, researchers, and patients from early prototyping to validation in clinical settings.
Flexibility to assume other tasks: As an early-stage startup, Secuped offers diverse opportunities. Depending on your strengths and interests, you can take on tasks related to prototyping, testing, supplier interaction, or regulatory strategy.
About Your Skills and Experience
Background in Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, Applied Physics, Data Science, or similar at MSc. or PhD level.
Programming skills in Python, C++, or similar languages.
Experience in algorithm development, signal/image processing, and preferably machine learning.
Familiarity with frameworks such as OpenCV, ITK, PyTorch or TensorFlow.Experience with structured collection and storage of medical data.
Experience or interest in real-time systems, sensor fusion, or embedded implementation.
Affinity with medical device development (ISO 13485 experience is a plus).
Strong sense of ownership, curiosity, and ability to work independently in a multidisciplinary startup.
Good communication in English (Dutch is a plus).
Ownership and drive to take initiative in a startup environment.
About Your Benefits
1-year contract, extendable based on market developments.
A key role in a small, ambitious MedTech startup, with an experienced team.
The chance to grow with the company and help shape the product from the ground up.
Learning opportunities across engineering, regulatory, and business domains.
Membership in the PLNT startup community.
Competitive salary, based on experience level.
A flexible work culture with lots of autonomy and impact.
Where Molecules Meet Opportunities
Be part of the core team of our growing organisation. This is an opportunity to have real impact, to learn fast and to help buildin the organisation and solution according to your vision.
Only apply if...
If you feel comfortable working in a fast-changing environment and you are good at taking ownership of your responsibilities, Secuped is a great place. This does mean that your experience and analytical skills need to be sufficient to independently (but not alone) build a solution that is reliable and safe.

We help people with diabetes who are at risk of foot ulceration with easy-to-use home monitoring. This enables the prevention of foot wounds through simple, timely intervention.
For health care providers: We enable health care professionals who diagnose, treat and educate patients at risk of diabetic foot ulcers by enabling zero-effort monitoring between consultations. resulting in earlier detection, easy intervention and significantly better health and QOL outcomes.
For payers: Our foot monitoring service reduces cost for diabetic foot ulcer treatment and amputation through prevention and reduces workload in wound and rehabilitation care.
